FRUM

The demand for an environment in which everyone can use information equally, regardless of disability, age or culture, is increasing. To achieve this, Samsung Electronics commissioned FRUM to build a global web accessibility standard strategy to provide an equal, discrimination-free online environment for users all over the world.

FRUM took on this project by applying the concept of environmental design–the concept of universal design, rather than using the existing technical approach. With the goal of designing a global top-tier AA-level web accessibility environment, we defined specific items of action: improving the website’s front end based on the establishment of a global guide and improving usability for its users with disabilities. Based on the disability usability tests completed by users with various types of disability, we extracted specific issues and presented directions for improvement. Furthermore, we made a Sample Book for front-end improvement using the Samsung.com sample templates as the subject. Based on the FGI of customers with disabilities, we were able to dramatically improve usability through various improvement measures. Furthermore, to maintain a continuous web accessibility environment, we improved the global operation process and ran a web accessibility support team to successfully perform support work such as annual training.

As a result of this project, we received verification of the successfully built web accessibility environment as AA Level, which was the original goal of the project, and the usability was dramatically improved through the usability evaluation of users with disabilities. Through this project, Samsung Electronics was able to successfully introduce a “people-centered philosophy of acknowledging diversity and embracing differences” into the global web environment and lay the foundation for creating a “world of equal communication without barriers.”
